written by: Bestbuymouthguard.com

Introduction:

A mouth guard is basically a pliable plastic device or equipment designed perfectly to cover and protect the internal and external tissues and structures of the mouth and the teeth. This intraoral appliance is generally worn to cover up the maxillary teeth and gums and to prevent and reduce potential oral injury during active participation in contact sports. It also serves as an effective treatment for bruxism and for TMJ disorder. It is also used during certain dental procedures like tooth bleaching.

Need for a mouth guard:

A professionally fitted mouth guard reduces the chance of potential tooth damage, painful injury or laceration of the lips, tongue or mouth.Mouth guard serves as a protective covering and helps in absorbing the impact that results in a damaged jaw and concussion.Persons who are engaged in sports activities where they are exposed to possibilities of injury to teeth or jaw undoubtedly require a mouth guard. A proper fitting mouth guard can minimise exposure to such risks. Mouth guards should be necessarily worn by those participating in contact sports like boxing, football or hockey. It is also highly advisable for those playing non contact sports and those engaged in other recreational activities to wear a protective mouth guard.Mouth guard also serves as an effective treatment for bruxism and TMJ disorder.

TMJ mouth guard:

TMJ is a joint that controls the movements of the jaw.TMJ is the short form for temporomandibular joint disorder and is characterized by acute pain in the jaw area and clicking sounds in the jaw. This ailment causes severe pain, discomfort and soreness in the TMJ ligaments, nerves and the area impacted by the motion of the jaw. These mouth guards are essential devices in correcting and rectifying this joint dysfunction. This disorder is very commonly noted in people who suffer from bruxism, which is the subconcious grinding, gritting or clenching of teeth either when awake or when asleep. Getting a mouth guard fitted, is a conservative form of treatment to alleviate the pain and the stress in the Temporomandibular joint as it assures that the inflammation subsides and eases off completely. Dentists provide you with custom made mouth guards that are adapted to fit perfectly into your mouth and also ensures that it is comfortable for you to wear.

Types of mouth guards:

Basically there are three types of mouth guards. The stock mouth protectors are ready made mouth guards that are easily available in all sports goods shops and pharmacy stores. As nothing could be done to adjust them to perfectly suit you it is not generally recommended by dentists.
The boil and bite mouth guards are immersed in hot water to soften it and then placed in the mouth and shaped to fit the contours of your teeth with the help of your fingers and tongue pressure.
The custom fit mouth protectors are perfectly designed and constructed as per the instructions of the dentist to suit the individual requirements of the patient. These are a bit expensive but assures maximum comfort and protection.

Conclusion:

It is very essential that one takes utmost care in cleaning and maintaining these mouth guards. Proper care of these mouth protectors ensure an absolutely germ free mouth guard and good oral hygiene.

A mouth guard is a mouthpiece, a protector worn by people for different reasons depending on the type it is. There are thus many types of mouth guards. Examples could include the following; a hockey mouth guard, a rugby mouth guard, a boxing mouth guard and a snoring mouth guard.

The above mentioned are mostly worn during sports to shield the user against damage that could so easily be caused during an accident, with the exception of a snoring guard. Damage could be; tooth hurt, gum injuries, and the like.

A snoring mouth guard on the other hand is an oral appliance, plastic to be precise, worn by a person whilst sleeping. It fits between the upper and lower jaws of the user, otherwise known as one of the mandibular appliances.

It is a clinically proven medical appliance that curbs snoring. Snoring as is familiar to many is the action of breathing via one’s mouth while sleeping instead of the nose, which is a common but dangerous habit. Snoring is an ignored habit that means harm. Most that snore, as proven medically, do so due to breathing problems, night chest congestions, stuffy bedrooms, asthma, and/or major chest problems. To all who snore, this plastic, comfortable, and very safe piece could be of great relief.

The snoring mouth guard is highly recommended to control sleep disorders. It covers ones mouth therefore forcing them to breathe through the nose instead of the mouth. It also prevents premature wearing of the teeth that happens when one is snoring. Dentists say it also prevents grinding teeth. Grinding means wearing of the teeth due to frequent friction. With the frequent “bad sleepers,” this could mean heaven on earth as it covers amongst their old habits- snoring.

It is secure and should only be used after medical recommendation by a professional specialist. Most people would want to ignore or skip a dentist’s check-up before buying themselves a snoring mouth guard but with vital reason is it safer to first consult a dentist to know the magnitude of the problem and the damage already caused before embarking on buying the piece.

Snore prevention is a factor ignored by many with reason of,” What is done in the dark, in this case snoring, stays in the dark. Others do not consider it much of a problem, in fact to many, it’s not an issue. So long sleep is there, snoring could mean nothing. However, it is important to note that a snoring mouth guard is a safety precaution and the solution to an old habit that dies hard.

With this kind of information well secured, it serves as a revelation to all who so badly wish to prevent snoring, either for themselves, their spouses (which is very disturbing), and their children or for friends. A snoring mouth guard thus guards.

Many would want to ask how expensive or cheap it is. The piece is sure affordable and is worth the cost. A snoring mouth guard is a sure remedy and savior!!!

In other words, it does not offer solution for severe sleep apnea and you will need to look for other remedies. The device is also known to cause side effects which include lip dryness, excessive salivation and discomfort.
Night mouth guard is used to stop the grinding of teeth when sleeping. Finding the proper mouth guard is not that hard because there are certain things to look out for. The mouth guard can be got right from the local dentist a simple appointment will do the trick. Going and buying the mouth guards without the proper knowledge can give results that are not pleasing.

How a mouth guard works

A Night mouth guard works by preventing full closure of the mouth. This reduces the pain that is caused by the teeth grinding and dental damage. They are made of three types, the soft night guards, hard night guards and the dual laminate night guards. With the soft night guards, they are characterized by, being comfortable and price friendly. By being soft however they become worn out easily especially if one clenches a lot. Their fitting is also easy but they are meant for those whose clenching is not extreme. Hard night guards are fabricated with hard acrylic material that makes them more durable than the soft night guards. They are meant for those people who clench a lot. This device might not be quite as comfortable as the previous one because it does not compress under stress.

Things to consider when choosing a night mouth guard

There are several guidelines to acquiring the correct night mouth guard. Some are, look for one that actually protects the teeth. If the teeth keep on grinding from time to time, they end up wearing off making them sensitive. That is why when selecting a mouth guard one should ensure that it is effective. Mouth guards fit every on but to make them more effective one needs to have the customized for convenience. With the proper mouth guard one should be able to close or open the mouth without any discomfort. The best mouth guard should have a soft upper layer design to cushion and absorb any movement during the night. The device should properly influence jaw alignment without exacerbating the problem.

The device should be guaranteed to serve the purpose it is meant for. Companies that deal with these devices are supposed to give a 30 day guarantee and complete refund incase it is found to be ineffective. However when purchasing this device, look for one that offers 60 or more days guarantee. A good night mouth guard should be easy to clean and reuse.

The last is the dual laminate night guard. This mouth guard combines both the characteristics of the soft and the hard mouth guards. The first soft vinyl layer protects the teeth and provides maximum comfort. This is meant to cushion the teeth even under extreme pressure. The outer layer is a hard durable acrylic design. It is unbreakable under clenching and is guaranteed to offer maximum protection to the teeth. These night guards are available in any dentist stores.

For the best possible outcomes, have the mouth guard fitted by a dentist who has specialized in TMJ problems. To reduce those sleepless nights and also protect the teeth opt for the right set of night mouth guards

Is a Mouth Guard for TMJ Beneficial for Treating this Dental Joint Disorder?
written by: Bestbuymouthguard.com

Patients suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder not only experience significant pain but their jaw movement is also delimited as well. This is the reason that TMJ patients seem to be seeking relief from this disorder, and a mouth guard for TMJ is the best way that this disorder can be treated. These guards are even recommended by TMJ specialists since they are a non-surgical treatment and help curing TMJ in the most painless way. However, there are many other benefits of using mouth guards or splints for treating TMJ as well.

TMJ specialists mostly recommend patients suffering from this jaw joint disorder to wear these guards, mainly at night. The worst symptom of TMJ is the clenching and grinding of teeth caused by this disorder. During the day, it might be easy for patients to try not to clench and grind their teeth. However, when asleep, TMJ patients often unconsciously clench and grind their teeth. Thus, one of the health benefits of a mouth guard for TMJ is that most of the joint stress behaviors are effectively soothed even when the TMJ patient is sleeping.

TMJ patients will be able to sleep relatively soundly if they wear a mouth splint if they wear an effective bite guard or mouth splint when going to bed. The back teeth are allowed to close upon each other properly when these guards are worn thus the loud grinding of the teeth is prevented, and TMJ patients get to sleep peacefully.

Temporomandibular joint disorders can even cause the jaw muscles to become tensed or the jaw disk to get misaligned, as a result of which TMJ patients suffer from headaches. The muscles and tissues supporting the jaw, and joints in the jaw are overworked due to the teeth clenching and grinding symptom of this disorder, which is the major cause of muscle tension the leads to headaches. Not only, the jaw, but even the head, neck and shoulders can also be stressed by the Temporomandibular joint disorder, which is another cause of these TMJ-related headaches. This stress, muscle tension and other symptoms related to this disorder that might cause a patient to suffer from headaches can be relieved by wearing a mouth guard for TMJ.

Apart from preventing jaw clenching and teeth grinding, mouth splints can offer a lot more benefits. The most basic sign of Temporomandibular joint disorders is that the top and bottom teeth are not able to close evenly. Thus, the closure of the teeth can be effectively and successfully corrected by wearing mouth splints. Therefore, the most adverse and major symptom of TMJ can be effectively removed by wearing these guards. Thus, once the symptoms of this join disorder disappear and languish, even the damage caused by it will also reverse. No doubt there are many other TMJ treatments out there; however, they are too costly, too painful or too strenuous. A mouth guard for TMJ, therefore, offers a cost effective, easy and simple solution to treat this join disorder that occurs in the jaw.

Mouth guard for snoring-Get Rid of Snoring with a Mouth Guard
written by: Bestbuymouthguard.com

A Mouth guard for snoring is a device designed to assist in management of snoring. We all know that snoring can be very stressful when you are trying to sleep and a snorer happens to be sleeping near you. The snorer is not spared either as he or she may suffer low esteem as a result of frequent complaints or teasing in the case of children. These people will be glad therefore to know that there exists a solution for this embarrassing problem. A mouth guard works by ensuring that enough air enters your throat to avoid snoring. But to understand this better we need to demystify what exactly happens to cause snoring?

A simple definition of snoring is the vibration of part of the human respiratory structures leading to production of sound and vibration due to restricted or obstructed air movement while breathing during sleeping. Snoring differs in intensity from person to person as some people will snore loudly and unpleasantly while others will snore softly. In the second case there may not even be need for a mouth guard as snoring is barely audible. It should be noted that doctors have warned that snoring in sleep may be an early sign of Obstructive sleep- apnea (OSA).

How a mouth guard for snoring works

A mouth guard for snoring works by ensuring that airways remain unobstructed to avoid snoring. This irregular airflow is caused by;Throat weakness which causes your throat to close when you sleepBadly positioning of jaw causing muscle tensionFat deposits in and around throatObstructive sleep apneaThe air way tissue making contact resulting in vibrationsDrugs and alcohol relaxing throat
The above can also cause sleep apnea which is a condition where respiration keeps getting cut off and hence causing sleep deprivation in the sufferer .This may lead to death due to lack of oxygen. Luckily a mouth guard can also be applied here to create sufficient air passage.

So how exactly does this device work? A doctor or dentist with specialized training is the one to consult for this kind of help. This is because the most effective anti snore guards are those made especially for your mouth as it will fit you better. A technical name for the mouth guard is mandibular advancement splints. Their operation is simple despite the big name. They basically pull the tongue at the back and create space for air to pass. Some people have reported some side effects like gum irritation and excessive salivation but they are rare and hardly ever serious.

Other anti-snore alternative alternatives include surgery to get rid of the tissue or fat and straps. Most people prefer the anti snore guard due to its non invasive nature unlike surgery which opens you to complications. It’s always a good idea to work on ways to better your health and reduce snoring in the process. A good place to start would be to eat healthy and exercise and most of all to prevent further throat damage get yourself a mouth guard for snoring.

The Use of Mouth Guard For Sleep Apnea – Some basic Information
written by: Bestbuymouthguard.com

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. This is a sleep disorder caused when the air passage is obstructed due to the tongue and other soft tissues falling back into the air passage while the individual is sleeping. The net result is that breathing stops for short periods of time. These disturbances to sleep in the night can lead to drowsiness during the day time. Patients with sleep apnea also snore loudly during sleep. Individuals with OSA are also at a higher risk of developing hypertension, stroke, and in the worst case even death.

The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) serves to alleviate severe sleep apnea. However, medical specialists recommend a mouth guard for patients who do not respond well to CPAP or those who have only mild to moderate OSA. The mouth guard is actually a dental appliance used for the purpose and comes in two forms: mandibular repositioning appliance and tongue retainer.

The mandibular repositioning appliance works by exerting some pressure on the lower jaw to push it forward. When the position of the jaw is changed, the tongue’s position is altered in a manner that it does not obstruct the air passage. The appliance maintains stability of the lower jaw and helps to keep the mouth closed. This device is more popular and commonly used and it resembles a mouth guard used in sports.

The tongue retainer works in a different way. A suction cup that is attached to the tongue pulls the tongue forward and prevents it from falling back. Thus there is no obstruction to the passage of air. This device, though less common, is seen to work more effectively and helps the patient to sleep better.

These devices are best chosen and fitted by a dentist who is specialized in making dental appliances. They can design the best mouth guard for sleep apnea keeping in mind individual needs of the patient. The initial examination and choice of the appliance to be used by the patient after appropriate evaluation can take up to a few weeks. This device also needs adjustment on a periodic basis.

The mouth guard for sleep apnea can cost anywhere from a hundred to a thousand dollars.

Benefits of Using a Mouth Guard for Sleep Apnea

The dental appliances are noted to have the following benefits when used by those suffering from sleep apnea:There is considerable reduction in apnea and the patient sleeps better. The appliance works well for those who lie on their backs or on their stomachs. In most patients there is less snoring and the loudness of snoring is noticeably reduced. The patient compliance is seen to be higher with the mouth guard than the CPAP.It is easy to use and carry.

Side Effects of Using a Mouth Guard for Sleep Apnea

Use of a mouth guard for sleep apnea brings with it some side effects such as the following:Disturbed sleep till the individual gets used to the device.A lot of saliva is secreted. Lips also dry out frequently. There is pain in the jaw and discomfort when using the device. The patient needs time to get used to the appliance. There have been instances of change in tooth/jaw position owing to prolonged use of the device.
The side effects of using the mouth guard are far and few when compared to the benefits that the patient experiences in the longer term. Using a mouth guard for sleep apnea clearly reduces the instances of disturbed sleep and snoring in the night and improves energy levels during the day.

Clenching together of the upper and lower teeth is called Bruxism. Clenching causes pressure on the muscles, tissues and the other surrounding structures of the jaw which further leads to headaches; pain in the neck, jaw and ear; muscle tension and wearing down of the teeth. Using a mouth guard for clenching teeth is the most effective remedy. The symptoms created by clenching of the teeth are called “TMJ” (temperomandibular joint) problems. If left untreated Bruxism causes damage to the temperomandibular joint, the hinge which connects the upper and lower jaws. Most of the people who clench their teeth tend to grind them which is sliding the teeth over each other in a forward, backward or sideways movement. Grinding of the teeth is a subconscious behavior of the bruxer which can wear down the teeth. Teeth clenching is sometimes caused by stress and anxiety but it occurs mostly during the sleep and is mostly caused by abnormal bite or missing or crooked teeth.

Treatment

The most common treatment for Bruxism is using a mouth guard. The mouth guard is a horseshoe shaped plastic appliance with shallow borders that can be worn either on the top or the bottom arch. It acts as a protective cushion between the upper and lower teeth. Mouth guards are worn to protect teeth from injuries caused by teeth clenching and also during sports.

There are three types of mouth guards:

Stock Mouth Protectors
These are ready to wear mouth guards that are inexpensive and can be bought from most of the sports stores and department stores. They are bulky, cannot be adjusted to fit and they make breathing and talking difficult. Stock mouth protectors provide little or no protection, so the dentists do not recommend them.

Boil and Bite Mouth Protectors
These mouth protectors can also be bought from sports stores but they fit better than the stock mouth protectors. They are made of thermoplastic material which softens when placed in hot water. This softened mouth protector when placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth with the help of finger and tongue pressure fits well.

Custom-Fitted Mouth Protectors
These mouth protectors are designed individually and made in a professional lab. The dentist takes an impression of the teeth and then the mouth guard is molded over the model using a special material. The custom-fitted mouth guard is more expensive as a special material is used and as extra time and work is involved. But these mouth guards are the most comfortable and they provide more protection.

Mostly mouth guards are used to cover the upper teeth only but in some cases if the person is wearing braces or any other fixed dental appliance on the lower jaw, then the person has to wear a mouth guard to cover the lower teeth as well. A mouth guard for clenching teeth must be comfortable, durable, resist tears and easy to clean. It should not restrict breathing and speech. The mouth guard for clenching teeth is called a nocturnal bite plate or bite splint. Adults and children who clench teeth must wear a nocturnal bite plate to prevent tooth damage.
